Denna fågel finns idag bara på Nya Zeelands sydö och man trodde under en period att arten var utdöd. Troligen är beståndet för litet för att överleva. Arten har tappat sin flygförmåga då den inte behövt flyga i en miljö utan marklevande rovdjur.

‘Takahe bird without the ability to fly’ This bird is only found on the South Island of New Zealand and it was believed for a period that the species was extinct. Most likely the species is too small to survive. The bird have lost its ability to fly as it did not need to fly in an environment without terrestrial predators.
